01 THE IMAGE PATH

The Negative
& Printer Lights

Lacerta exposes the image into one of 57 modeled negatives, then carries the resulting density into LAD-calibrated RGB printer timing. Negative response and printer lights share one continuous path, so exposure and color decisions arrive at the print as lab timing rather than disconnected digital adjustments.

02 SPATIAL RESPONSE

Halation

A two phase process models a natural halation that will only enhance and never distract from your shot.

Grain is generated in density, and modeled by the selected negative's documentation.

04 DEVELOPMENT

Process, then re-time.

Push and pull behave like chemistry: contrast, interlayer behavior, fog, grain, and toe move in tandem. Exposure compensation re-times the negative. Bleach bypass retains metallic silver on the negative or print for denser contrast and restrained color.

05 THE PRINT

Negative and print, balanced together.

Thirteen print stocks carry the timed negative into projection. Direct projection is available for reversal originals. Negative and print are system-balanced, and projection models dye interaction so neutrals remain neutral while color separations mix through the modeled dyes.

06 OUTPUT & DELIVERY

The final display rendering stage.

Lacerta sits at the end of the node tree in place of the output CST. It carries the complete color pipeline into SDR or HDR delivery, saves repeatable lab profiles, and exports the non-spatial transform as a 33-point or 65-point cube.

IR Disclosure

The qualities of IR film is modeled based on the documented stock character and color science of what we typically see based on visible light. It is not the same as true infrared capture.

FALSE-COLOR MATERIALS

Infrared response.

EIR and Aerochrome render chlorophyll-bright foliage in reds and magentas, the way infrared-sensitive emulsions have. The IR Response control sets how strongly foliage's near-infrared glow is synthesized. It has no effect on any normal stock.

The Strange and Beatiful, Now In Your Control.

In the darkroom, solarization is the Sabattier effect: a part-developed negative is flashed with light, and tones and colors fold and invert past a threshold. The boundary between reversed and unreversed regions creates bright and dark "Mackie lines". Retained silver lays a cool, pewtery veil over the image.

Lacerta's engine allows this process because it models the actual chemical development process. Conveniently placed at the critical moment, you can solarize any image accurately.

Flash Intensity sets the depth of the reversal and can be keyframed. Chemical Timing moves where the flash lands in development. Metallic Sheen controls the silver veil. Mackie Line Contrast etches the reversal contour. It renders live in the plugin and remains outside exported LUTs.

Leaves hang into frame against a pale, near-white sky and drift slowly. Reversal renders them in magenta, lilac, and pale green, and bright green Mackie contours trace every leaf edge while the background holds a smooth, even density.

COLOR SCIENCE

Density first.

Lacerta processes the image in density space through continuous H&D-style characteristic curves, the same terms a lab uses. The negative and print are balanced as one system; printer lights are LAD-calibrated timing moves; projection models dye interaction; grain and halation respond to the densities on the film, not the pixels on screen.

Lacerta's core tonal response is derived from published manufacturer sensitometric and densitometric specifications, including cinema system and LAD references, and has been dialed to taste for neutrality. Stock-to-stock color, grain, and handling are modeled from published film characteristics. A small number of archival stocks for which no public primary curve document could be located are historically informed approximations.
